DATELINE: HOUSTON, TEXAS – On Sunday, March 27, the Flyboys of Flag Troupe Houston once again joined the Bunnies on the Bayou for their Easter event. Voted Favorite Philanthropic Organization and Favorite Benefit for 2004 by OutSmart's readers, this is the grand outdoor cocktail party of the year, now held annually at the elegant courtyard of the prestigious Wortham Center in downtown Houston Though this had to be one of the coldest, windy Easters in recent years, most expected guests were not dissuaded from showing up, with a large crowd simply opting to put on more clothes than is traditional for this open air party, and filling up the courtyard by 4PM. Obviously, nobody wanted to miss this favorite party.
This performance came on the heels of another one just a few hours earlier, just before daybreak, in the midst of “Salvation” the official after-hours party of Jungle 13. As a late-breaking development for Houston's famous cicuit Jungle Weekend, three of the Flyboys joined two dancers and dance diva Dynasty in a special performance in the wee hours of Easter Sunday morning at at the M Bar, at 402 Main Street in downtown Houston. The party was an unqualified hit, packing beautiful people, great music, and a general buzz of excitement into the elegant, neo-classical surroundings of the former bank building. No doubt that at that point in time there was no more exciting place to be within 1,000 miles. Pictures and video of the show will be available soon.
In fact, the Salvation performance followed another one just a week before at Meteor, making this the busiest 8 days the flaggers have had to date, and making the Bunnies show the culmination of a three show series.
For the Flyboys the outdoor events are always a bit of a challenge when there is any kind of breeze. But, this year at Bunnies the Flaggers faced the worst climatic conditions with which they have ever had to contend. The cold certainly made things uncomfortable for flaggers wearing shirtless, if otherwise glittering, costumes. However, the real obstacle was the persistent wet wind, with gusts reported of up to 30 mph. There were those wondering if the Flyboys would perform at all. Still, by around 5PM the wind seemed to ease up ever so slightly, and the Flyboys, with the directive not to stop flagging regardles of what happened, took their chances.

The Flyboys paraded in with their flags on actual flag poles, and were warmly received with cheers and applause by the bundled-up folks, many of whom had been expressly waiting for the Flyboys to show up.
As an area had been cleared for the flaggers to perform, one very pink-clad, somewhat inebriated guest, in very big blond hair (and other very big things), apparently thought this newly opened space was the perfect place in which to sashay, and promptly occupied the spot. Like zookeepers trying to coax a lost and confused large bird back into a cage, volunteers tried for a couple of minutes to persuade the perplexed creature in the feather boa to move away from the center of the performance area, to the amusement of onlookers.
Then, just as the show was about to begin, Mother Nature walloped the flaggers with one good, cold, wet, gusty slap, making clear she was still in charge – to the audible moan of the audience. In the end, the show did go on, and the Flyboys managed to overcome the elements -though they did get wind-slapped by their own flags a few times. The Flyboys never stopped flagging, despite a couple of mishaps brought on by the wind (with one flagging even with a pair of sunglasses stuck to the edge of a flag – ouch!) and the audience was as enthusiastic and kind as the flaggers could have hoped for.
The flaggers performed two main numbers switching flags from purple and red to gold with red trim, matching their gold and red costumes. They performed “Haru” by Haru, and for the first time, Toni Braxton’s “Spanish Guitar.” As the show ended, red rose petals were thrown into the air, and the Flyboys paraded out as they came in. The Flyboys that performed were Marco Roberts (troupe leader), Elester Stewart, David Acala, Tim Swann, and Toby Black.
The video and pictures of this show will be available soon. However, the Snow Bunnies perfomance pictures and video can now be viewed on this website by clicking below:
