DATELINE: HOUSTON, TEXAS – The Easter season in Houston always starts with big celebrations, and Easter weekend was again a busy one for the Flyboys, participating in two events back to back Easter Sunday. First, at the official Jungle 14 after hours party, Lost in Space, where where one solo Flyboy performance by Marco Roberts opened the stage performance of the night (originally there were to be two flaggers, but logistical issues forced a last minute change). In any case, to say the performance was “revolutionary” is an understatement. The crowd’s cheers grew louder as the Flyboy almost spun into orbit, and then the Beyond Dancers splashed unto the stage with Dynasty to deliver a perfectly executed production. For the second year in a row, the Spoiled Boyz’s official Jungle after hours party delivered the biggest visual spectacle of the official Jungle party series (more performers, more visual production, more bang! factor), and the crowd loudly showed its appreciation.
The all-night revelries were followed by that grand dame of outdoor parties, Houston’s largest community event aside from the Pride Parade: Bunnies on the Bayou! For the third year in a row, the Flyboys paraded through the crowd, this time with their banner flags bearing their blue emblem; and, as is their custom at Bunnies on Easter, presented a new production. This time, they performed on the narrow concrete slabs right on the cascade fountain. One false step (or body spin), and it would have been painful curtains for the show. But, the setting was spectacular, and no one fell off.
The troupe marched in and out to Britney Spears’ dance version of “Don’t Let Me Be the Last to Know,” suggested and provided by DJ Dan Meador, who often provides music and music ideas to the Flyboys. The Flyboys performed to Beyonce’s “Check On It” (thanks to Lionel Vargas), to an obscure, long-titled trance song “The Second You Sleep (I Stay to Watch You Fade Away)” by Tess, and to “Wings,” the widely-recognized theme from “Brokeback Mountain,” which the crowd went crazy over as soon as it heard the first notes. The audience was delighted by how the Flyboys kept pulling flags seemingly out of nowhere. A blast of pink rose petals from the top of the cascade graced the finale with fragrant, biodegradable ‘tickertape.’
